Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour Day 3 Recap – “The Power Tour continued the third day of the epic cross country tour by traveling from Champaign, IL to Madison, IL. The towns don’t look far from each other on a map and on the highway would only take 2 and a half hours to travel to, but Hot Rod’s route extended that a bit. We left our hotel at 8:20 A.M. and arrived at the venue 4:00 P.M. on the dot. That’s 7 hours and 40 minutes all together. We did stop for 15 minutes at Subway for lunch and 20 minutes to wash our cars along the way, but that still totals 7 hours compared to 2 and a half. I will admit that it was nice to cruise through the backroads and go through the little towns, but the stop signs in the towns were killing us. Every year we seem to get a little whiny about the routes, but Hot Rod really does a great job mapping out where we are going to go. I can’t imagine the time and planning that goes into getting thousands of cars from point A to point B while still taking them on scenic roads that have frequent gas stations.
At the Gateway Motorsports Park, Holley hosted a burnout competition at the drag strip where they rated people’s burnouts by the reaction from the crowd. My dad took his Hellcat out and spent over a minute smoking off the drag radials until they were bald and everybody loved it. The crowd registered 98db. A big blown truck went out there and built up his boost and when he let off started lighting them up and quickly blew the tire completely off! Some people went absolutely nuts for it and set a 101db response. He got a close second, but man it was cool. Towards the end of the event tomorrow, Hot Rod is attempting to break the Aussie’s world’s largest burnout record at the dragway in Memphis. That will be absolutely awesome and I hope we cream them. Also, tomorrow night Comp Cams is hosting a cruise night on Beale Street. If you’re in the area, this is one you will not want to miss.” – Kaleb

We were at the drive-in where you took pictures of Dodge Daytona and cars. Also at Route 66 garage giving out free hot dogs & drinks. Yellow Corvette convertible in background. After meal at drive-in the hot dog was over-fill, but had to do it. Great place & people!!
Your comments are spot on. Frustrating because the town with the brick square downtown (pictured) (Collinsville?) was also county seat where we saw county police doing nothing to help traffic along with city police seriously missing.
Blame the communities for their ignorance, not HRPT planners.
Notice Redbud, IL even had a banner from Mayor welcoming HRPT ? Redbud a picture perfect small town embraced HRPT , brought out people and red carpet. Great!
Thank You for this trip journal
