We recently heard our friend Randy Pobst’s 1977 Trans Am needed a suspension overhaul. No better opportunity could arise for us to outline the performance and ride quality that is gained by upgrading a 2nd Gen GM F-body with one of our complete coil-over suspension systems.
Before getting too far ahead, in case you were living under a rock… Randy is a multi-time SCCA World Challenge GT Series Champion, two-time class winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona, with over 90 pro wins to his career. Randy has enjoyed factory supported drives with brands like Mazda, Volvo, Audi, and Porsche over the years. In recent years, Randy has also served as wheelman for many online automotive publications like Motor Trend and Hagerty. Needless to say, Randy has the #drivermod in spades.
In this first of five episodes, we establish a baseline by taking the “Randit” out to a temporary autocross track at our local airstrip to seeing how quick it turn a lap with Randy behind the wheel.
To be clear, Randy’s Trans Am isn’t a stocker. The factory 6.6L T/A only mustered up 200 horsepower when new, while Randy’s benefits from a rebuilt 400 CI Pontiac mill with a Holley Sniper EFI system atop the intake manifold and a Hyperspark ignition system. It now boasts 368 horsepower and 401 lb ft or torque at the rear tires on a chassis dyno. The suspension also benefits from previous modifications.
Enjoy the first episode to see where we were able to land with the car as it was delivered to us, and feel free to catch the rest of the episodes in the series playlist we set up. In that episode, we detail everything the second gen complete suspension system comes with, along with disassembling the Randit’s current suspension and installing ours in place.
